SMA asphalt vs tarmacadam for Irish driveways

For modern residential driveways in Ireland, 10mm or 6mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) has largely replaced traditional open-graded tarmacadam. SMA costs only €5 to €10 per m² more than standard tarmac (€75 to €115/m² for a full 2-course build), but its stone-on-stone interlock resists power-steering tyre scuffs from heavy SUVs and electric cars and lasts 20 to 25 years.

Why contractors recommend Stone Mastic Asphalt over old-style tarmac, and how to tell the difference.

Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) vs traditional tarmacadam

FeatureStone Mastic Asphalt (SMA)Traditional tarmacadam (macadam)
Stone structureGap-graded stone-on-stone skeleton filled with rich bitumen mastic and cellulose fibresContinuously graded stone with higher air voids (open or medium graded)
Power-steering scuffsHigh resistance — heavy EVs and SUVs turning in tight drives won't tear the surfaceProne to scuffing and plucking in warm weather when wheels turn on the spot
Water & frost resistanceNearly impermeable once rolled; stops winter freeze-thaw water getting into the matMore porous; holds dampness and moss over time in shaded Irish gardens
Surface finishSmooth, tight, velvet-black finish (usually 6mm or 10mm aggregate for driveways)Coarser, more open texture (10mm or 14mm aggregate)
Expected lifespan20 to 25 years on a 2-course Clause 804 build12 to 18 years before fretting and loose stones appear
Guide price (full dig-out)€75 to €115 per m²€70 to €105 per m²

Why modern cars chew up cheap tarmac

Twenty years ago, a typical family saloon weighed 1,200 kg and had narrow tyres. Today, a family SUV or electric vehicle weighs 2,000 kg to 2,600 kg with wide tyres and high-torque electric power steering.

When a driver turns the steering wheel while stationary to reverse out of a gate, the tyre twists violently on a single patch of stone. On single-course or open-graded tarmacadam, that twisting plucks the top stones out of the binder, leaving raw divots that fill with rain and freeze in winter. SMA's crushed basalt or gritstone aggregate locks directly together like a dry-stone wall, bound by polymer- or fibre-stabilised bitumen, so it handles turning torque without tearing.

Choosing between 6mm and 10mm SMA surface course

  • 10mm SMA surface course (laid at 40mm compacted depth): the all-round standard for Irish residential driveways, entrances and turning bays. Gives the ideal balance of smooth appearance, wet-weather tyre grip and structural strength.
  • 6mm SMA surface course (laid at 30mm–35mm depth): an ultra-fine, billiard-table finish often chosen for smaller urban front gardens and paths, though it requires a dead-level binder course underneath.
  • 14mm SMA or dense binder course: used on steeper rural hills and farm entrances where extra macro-texture grip is needed in icy weather or under tractor tyres.

Questions homeowners ask

Does SMA asphalt look shiny when first laid?

Freshly rolled SMA has a rich, dark bitumen sheen on top of the stone for the first 6 to 12 weeks. As traffic and rain wear off that microscopic surface film, it weathers to a uniform, dense charcoal grey-black.

Can SMA be laid in a single coat?

Only when overlaying an existing solid concrete or tarmac base (where a 40mm SMA surface course is laid over a hot bitumen tack coat). On a new dig-out over stone, SMA should always be laid as the 40mm top layer over a 60mm compacted bitumen binder course.
