Why per-m² rates drop on larger driveways
Every asphalt job carries fixed mobilisation costs: transporting a 2.5-tonne to 4-tonne tandem vibrating roller, a mini-digger and grab lorry, and minimum hot-asphalt insulated tipper loads from the plant.
- Under 50 m² (tight town frontages). Often requires barrowing and hand-raking hot SMA into corners where a road paver cannot turn, pushing full dig-out rates toward the upper end of €75 to €115/m².
- 80 m² to 150 m² (detached and widened drives). Allows a mini paver or full road paver to lay the mat in clean passes, keeping rates around €75 to €95/m² for full excavation or €55 to €68/m² for an overlay.
- 150 m²+ rural avenues. Machine-laid SMA or surface dressing (tar and chip at €25 to €45/m²) brings the cost per square metre down substantially.

- Sub-base depth and stone spec: e.g. 150mm to 200mm compacted Clause 804 granular sub-base over a geotextile weed/separation membrane.
- Compacted asphalt thickness: 60mm dense bitumen macadam binder course plus 40mm 10mm-grade SMA surface course (not a single thin 30mm coat on bare stone).
- Edge restraint: precast concrete kerbs or granite setts (€45 to €85/m) haunched in concrete so the roller can compact right to the edge without spreading.
- Drainage: ACO channel drains (€450 to €1,200) piped to a soakaway or rainwater gulley, plus recessed manhole covers.
- VAT at 13.5%: supply-and-lay driveway works qualify for the 13.5% reduced construction VAT rate as long as materials do not exceed two-thirds of the total bill.
