Driveway edging, ACO drainage and planning rules in Ireland
Because SMA asphalt is impermeable, every driveway needs proper falls (at least 1:60) into a linear ACO drainage channel (€450 to €1,200 connected to a soakaway or storm gulley) or a permeable border strip. Setting a granite cobble or precast kerb border (€45 to €85 per linear metre) haunched in concrete locks the edges of the asphalt so tyres never crumble the sides.
How edge restraints protect your asphalt, how ACO drains prevent puddles, and when Class 6 planning rules apply.

Ask a local contractor for a quoteDo you need planning permission to pave or widen a front garden?
Under Class 6 of Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), surfacing a garden in front of or beside a house is exempted development subject to strict surface-water conditions:
- Up to 5 m²: unconditionally exempt for any hard surface.
- Over 5 m²: exempt provided the surface is porous or rainwater run-off from the impermeable asphalt surface is directed to a soakaway, rain garden, lawn border or drainage channel within the curtilage of the house — never allowed to sheet directly across the public footpath or road.
- Widening the entrance piers: knocking a front boundary wall or widening the vehicular opening onto a public road (or dishing the council footpath) is not covered by Class 6 and requires planning permission from your local County or City Council.
- Protected structures & Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs): front-garden exemptions do not apply if the house is a Protected Structure.
If you prefer a fully permeable surface that drains straight through the stone without an ACO channel, see our sister guide on SuDS permeable resin bound driveways.
How water is cleared from an asphalt driveway
| Drainage element | Typical installed price | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy-duty ACO linear slot channel (B125 / C250 car & van rated) | €450 to €1,200 | Across the garage threshold, house path or front gate pier line to catch sheet run-off |
| Crate or clean-stone soakaway pit (in garden) | €550 to €1,100 | Required where no storm-water gulley is available or council rules forbid new storm connections |
| Recessed ductile-iron manhole tray (filled or flush) | €120 to €240 per cover | Replaces rusted cast-iron lids in the middle of the driveway |
| French gravel soakaway strip (150mm wide along wall) | €30 to €55 per linear metre | Ideal along boundary walls and flowerbeds on sloping sites |
Granite setts, brick borders and threshold aprons
Hot asphalt is compacted under a vibrating steel roller weighing several tonnes. Without a rigid concrete-haunched edge restraint installed before the asphalt arrives, the outer 150mm of blacktop cannot be compacted to full density and will crack away the first time a delivery van drops a wheel off the edge.
- Silver-grey or oatmeal granite setts (100×100mm or 200×100mm, €45 to €85/m): laid on a 100mm concrete bed with pointed mortar joints; frequently doubled or tripled at the road entrance to create a decorative rumble apron.
- Charcoal or brindle block-paving border (€40 to €65/m): a clean, cost-effective frame around suburban semi-detached driveways.
- Precast concrete pin kerbs or bullnose kerbs (€35 to €60/m): tough, practical edge restraint along hedges, lawns and long country avenues.

Questions homeowners ask
Can rainwater from my driveway run into the foul sewer?
No. Surface rainwater must never be connected to a foul sewer pipe. It must go to a dedicated surface-water storm drain (where permitted) or an on-site soakaway / gravel attenuation trench inside your boundary.
Should granite cobble edging be laid flush or raised?
Along a lawn or flowerbed, raising the granite cobble by 25mm to 40mm keeps soil and bark mulch off the asphalt and guides rainwater down to the ACO channel. Where cars cross into a side path or patio, the granite setts are laid flush with the asphalt.
